IN TWEET: ROGER EBERT AND GENE SISKEL INVENTED THE “DUELING CRITICS” FORMAT. SISKEL PASSED AWAY IN 1999 AND, TODAY, ROGER EBERT JOINED HIM IN THAT GREAT BIG MOVIE PALACE IN THE SKY. Roger Ebert , legendary film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times and one half of TV movie review duo Siskel and Ebert, died today after a long battle with cancer. Ebert had just posted online Tuesday about his relapse but, he was optimistic about bouncing back. He was 70 years old. When I was a kid, as far as movie reviews went, there was Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert . The rest of the critics were also-rans. Siskel and Ebert were the gold standard for movie lovers and trademarked their signature thumbs up/thumbs down style of final verdict. If one or, heaven forbid, both hated a movie, two thumbs down could spell death at the box office. They had that much power. Not only did people trust them, the audience loved them. Their constant bickering and sometimes vocal disagreements were a big part of the attra...
IN TWEET: A SERMON FROM THE SERVICE ATTENDED BY PRESIDENT OBAMA YESTERDAY FLIPS OUT RIGHT WINGERS AND REVEALS WHAT SCARES THEM MOST: THE TRUTH. If you’re a hard-core Evangelical and/or adherent to the Tea Party version of conservatism, it’s a pretty scary world out there. Once you pop your head out from under the rock of Fox News or crawl beyond the shadow of Rush Limbaugh’s massive gut, it’s hard out there for a Right Wing pimp , yo! Here’s the wicked scary “evidence” giving Righties the heebie jeebies: There’s a scary black man in the White House . YOWZA! The scary black man in the White House also happens to be a card-carrying Muslim Socialist who was born in A-freak-a ! OHMIGOSH! You’ve got those “wetbacks” massing on the border and climbing ladders to get into this country just so they can take our jobs . YIKES! The “filthy homosexuals” aren’t happy molesting children and boning sheep anymore, now they want to get married. GASP! The Second ...
IN TWEET: THIS “IRONSIDE” RE-MAKE IS A TALKY, TURGID SNORE. Blair Underwood makes an inauspicious return to series television in an updated version of IRONSIDE , a series that originally aired on NBC from 1967 to 1975. This re-vamp will be lucky if it sees the end of 2014. It’s an overly chatty snoozer that makes for a great drinking game: take a shot every time you look at your watch out of boredom. You’ll be passed out long before the pilot drags itself over the finish line. Aside from loving the iconic opening theme (which they don’t even bother resurrecting here), I wasn’t a devotee of the original IRONSIDE. Still, the show is a classic and it’s hard to argue with the force of nature that was the late, great Raymond Burr . Underwood steps into the title role and, sadly, doesn’t do a whole heck of a lot with it. I’ve been a big fan of his over the years but even he looks bored here. He’s also got a producer credit so it’s hard to give him a pass. Underwood’s partner in crime is Pe...
