IN TWEET: AN INTRIGUING PREMISE AND MEXICAN ACTOR DEMIÁN BICHIR ARE STAND-OUTS IN THE “THE BRIDGE,” AN UNEVEN BUT PROMISING NEW ORIGINAL FROM FX. In the opening moments of THE BRIDGE , a new crime drama that debuted last week on FX, a serial killer disrupts electronic surveillance on the Bridge of the Americas long enough to leave a chilling calling card: the lifeless body of a woman placed directly on the border line between the United States and Mexico. When authorities from both countries show up to investigate, El Paso police detective Sonya Cross ( Diane Kruger ) immediately stakes her claim because the victim, a judge, is from the U.S. Her Mexican counterpart, Det. Marco Ruiz ( Demián Bichir ), has no desire to add another crime to an already full plate back in Juárez and happily lets Cross take the reins. Things get ugly and more complicated when Cross and her colleagues make a shocking discovery while attempting to move the body: there are actually two victims. The killer...
IN TWEET: A SOLID CAST AND SOME SHARP WRITING ALMOST SAVES THE SHAMELESSLY DERIVATIVE AND MUDDLED “DEFIANCE,” A NEW SYFY ORIGINAL SERIES. Every time SyFy launches a new scripted series there’s a tiny ember of hope that reignites inside me. Will this be the show that picks up the mantle of great science fiction television? One that has been laying dormant since BATTLESTAR GALACTICA wrapped in 2009. Keep the dream alive because DEFIANCE is not that show. Behind the camera, there are some direct connections to the BSG mythos. Executive producers Michael Taylor and Kevin Murphy both worked on the dreadful prequel series CAPRICA and Taylor was a supervising producer and writer on BSG beginning with the third season. The third EP on DEFIANCE is Rockne S. O’Bannon , well known in science fiction circles for his work on series like SEAQUEST DSV , FARSCAPE and the criminally underrated re-boot of V which aired on ABC. Is DEFIANCE a bad show? Not really, especially considering how mu...
IN TWEET: ROGER EBERT AND GENE SISKEL INVENTED THE “DUELING CRITICS” FORMAT. SISKEL PASSED AWAY IN 1999 AND, TODAY, ROGER EBERT JOINED HIM IN THAT GREAT BIG MOVIE PALACE IN THE SKY. Roger Ebert , legendary film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times and one half of TV movie review duo Siskel and Ebert, died today after a long battle with cancer. Ebert had just posted online Tuesday about his relapse but, he was optimistic about bouncing back. He was 70 years old. When I was a kid, as far as movie reviews went, there was Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert . The rest of the critics were also-rans. Siskel and Ebert were the gold standard for movie lovers and trademarked their signature thumbs up/thumbs down style of final verdict. If one or, heaven forbid, both hated a movie, two thumbs down could spell death at the box office. They had that much power. Not only did people trust them, the audience loved them. Their constant bickering and sometimes vocal disagreements were a big part of the attra...
